Starring Iranian superstar Hedyeh Tehrani along with Hamid Farrokhnejad and Taraneh Alidusti, “Chaharshanbeh-Suri” is about a family in which the wife doubts her husband’s loyalty. Everything seems to indicate that the wife suffers from melancholia, but…
Farhadi was the second biggest winner of the festival after Ebrahim Hatamikia, the director of “In the Name of Father”.
“Chaharshanbeh-Suri” was awarded Crystal Simorghs for best director, best editing, and best actress. The film also won the audience favorite award of the festival, which was held in Tehran in late January.
Farhadi had said that he wanted the film to premiere around the time of the ancient Iranian celebration Chaharshanbeh-Suri, held annually on the last Wednesday (Chaharshanbeh) of the Iranian calendar year, during which Iranians set alight pieces of bush they’ve prepared before and jump over the fire. The celebration has become a time of chaos and conflict in Iranian cities over the past two decades, and Farhadi has given his film this name to symbolize the quarreling couple.
Tehran’s movie theaters are also slated to begin screening Sadra Abdollahi’s “Gone with the Wind”, which tells the story of a young couple living on an island whose marriage soon breaks down, leading to divorce.
